Na'aseh & Kulanu: Dog Whistles and Anti-Semitism with Professor Dan Breen
Wednesday, May 22, 2024 • 14 Iyyar 5784
7:00 PM - 9:00 PMCBE Sanctuary & ZoomNa'aseh speaker event to prepare us for this election season
When something you want to say is condemned by prevailing moral and political values, but you want to say it anyway, how do you do so? You use a 'dog-whistle.' That is, you express your sentiment in language that seems neutral or even meaningless on its face, but that people of like-mind--who are in on the 'code' -- will understand and respond to.
There are all sorts of dog-whistles, and we will explore some of them in this presentation, but we will pay special attention to the way dog-whistles are being used today to reach anti-semitic audiences. This is one of the most enduring kinds of dog-whistles, and it is important to see how the use of them is growing in our age of ubiquitous social media.
Dan Breen is Professor of the Practice of Legal Studies at Brandeis University. Registration available soon.
There is no charge for this event. Donations are accepted, when you sign up, to support Na'aseh future programming.
