Jean McGuire - Advocate for Educational Opportunities for Boston Students

Jean McGuire has spent a lifetime advocating for civil rights and equal rights in educational opportunity for black students. She was the first black woman to serve on the Boston School Committee. She helped found and served for 43 years as director of METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity), a voluntary school integration program. Throughout her tenure she has been a fierce advocate for METCO students, who rode buses from Boston to better-funded and resourced suburban schools.

She attended Howard University and received her degree in education from Boston State College in 1961. She received an honorary doctor of public service degree from Tufts University in 2017. She has been awarded many prizes including the Boston Ethical Community's Humanitarian of the Year in 2004 and Lifetime Achievement Award from Community Change in 2012.  Jean McGuire's name is one of the Boston civil rights leaders memorialized in the 1965 Freedom Plaza at the base of The Embrace sculpture on Boston Common.
